What is genetic testing?

Genetic testing is performed before you get pregnant to find out if you or your partner carry diseases that may be passed on to your child. Undergoing genetic testing can give you peace of mind or help you make important decisions about your future family.
How are genetic tests performed?
Usually, genetic testing is a simple blood test. A sample is drawn and sent to a lab that tests for recessive genes indicating specific diseases. If both mom and dad have a gene for a disorder, your baby has a 25% chance of being born with the condition.
What conditions are detected with genetic testing?
There are hundreds of disorders that can be identified with genetic testing, including:
- Fragile X syndrome
- Cystic fibrosis
- Blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia
- Tay-Sachs disease
- Spinal muscular atrophy
Dr. Patel can review your medical and family history to help you decide if genetic testing is right for you. Genetic testing may be recommended based on your ethnic background, too.
What happens if a genetic test shows I’m a carrier of certain diseases?
Both partners must have genes for a disease in order for it to be passed down to a child, so one parent having the gene doesn’t put your future children at risk.
If both parents carry a gene, the team educates you on what it means to be a carrier and helps you learn more about the specific condition. You also find out the chances that your baby will be born with the condition and learn about prenatal tests that check on your baby’s health if you go forward with the pregnancy.
Can genetic testing occur when I’m pregnant?
Genetic testing can be performed after conception as part of your prenatal care. If you’re 35 or older or have another child or family member with a genetic disorder, you may choose to have genetic testing done while the baby is in utero.
